SEN Self Evaluation Document
The Self Evaluation Document for Special Educational Needs was launched February 2008 at the Senco Termly Network meetings. The document has been subsequently sent electronically to all schools for them to personalise it to their setting. The Welsh version of the document will be distributed shortly.
This document was developed in response to colleagues’ requests for a tool that would help them to evaluate the provision and support for children with special needs. It aims to provide guidance on the process of review and self-evaluation.
The working group recognised that there were a number of self-evaluation proformas available to schools and offered this as an optional approach.
In developing the document the group wanted to enable teachers to ask the right questions and recognise the range of evidence that might be drawn on to support their evaluation. The questions were drawn from a number of sources including ESTYN’s Key Questions and acknowledge that this work is an amalgamation of statements from a wide range of material.
This document can be used as part of the on-going whole school process of evaluation and could be particularly helpful prior to inspection or in linking to Swansea’s Self Evaluation Awards.
Pilot schools were chosen to use the document and report back to the working group any observations they had made .At the launch Anne Lloyd Headteacher of Glyncollen praised the document from her perspective as Head/Senco and Mandy Jenkins, Senco from Cwmbwrla, explained how it had helped her immensely before going into an Inspection. Many colleagues agreed with these sentiments at the three meetings.
This document will be an invaluable tool to help schools monitor and evaluate their SEN provision. The English and Welsh versions of the document can be downloaded from the "Also in this Area" section above.
